Setting

The novel is set in the imaginary town of Maycomb County, in Southern Alabama during The Great Depression in the 1930s. It was a time of great racial discrimination. There was no unemployment benefit which made life extremely hard for the poor especially for the farmers whose crops may have failed. It was an era when only the rich travelled. Because most people were born, lived and died within a small geographical area their thinking was provincial.
